What size is a double bed?

When you’re buying a new bed, the range of sizes can be confusing as this varies throughout the world. Bed measurements in the UK are different to the USA and Europe. From small doubles and a standard double bed to a king size, we look at how to make the right choice for you and your home.

What is a double bed vs king size in the UK?

The size of a double bed varies in different parts of the world, especially between the UK and the USA. Bed sizes in the UK also differ from Europe, where they can often be longer.

It’s important to note that bed sizes are the size of the mattress. When you choose a bed, you’ll also need to factor in the width and length of the bed frame, headboard and foot board. Depending on the bed frame material and any padding, this can add a few centimetres to the overall size.

We’ve listed some measurements below so you can see the difference between a standard double bed and a king size bed in the UK:

A double bed is:

  • Width: about 135cm / 4ft 6in
  • Length: about 190cm / 6ft 3in

A king size bed is:

  • Width: about 150cm / 5ft
  • Length: about 200cm / 6ft 6in

What is the difference between a double bed and a small double?

A small double bed can be a useful solution for a compact bedroom. Although the bed length is usually the same, the width is slightly shorter. This size of bed is ideal for student rooms, where you might need to fit additional furniture such as a desk and chairs.

In the UK, a small double bed is:

  • Width: about 120cm / 4ft
  • Length: about 190cm / 6ft 3in

How to measure for a bed frame

Although designed for two adults, sometimes a double bed can feel a bit snug if you are tall or broad-shouldered. Think of this as a ‘middle-sized’ bed with everything else being either narrower and wider or shorter and longer.

As a general guide, many bed specialists recommend that your mattress should be at least 10–20cm longer than your height. If you’re taller than 5ft 11in (180 cm), then it’s worth considering a bed frame with a low footboard. This will give you plenty of wiggle room for any overhanging toes!

If you want a wider and longer bed, then a king size bed might be the answer. King size is a popular bed size because it gives you and your partner more room to move around. You will need to measure your bedroom carefully to make sure you have enough space around the bed without knocking your legs against the frame.

If you’re looking for a double bed to fit a small room, then you could consider a low platform bed frame. If you opt for a bed frame with open space below, this can be used for storage. Another option for a small bedroom is a bed frame covered with soft fabric. This bed type can help you protect your legs for those night-time trips to the bathroom!
