Spring is nearly here, so we've listed ideas for the garden to help you improve your outdoor space, from vibrant plants to garden furniture.
As the daffodils and crocuses come into bloom, spring is finally on the horizon. Now’s the time to revisit those ideas for the garden, so you can improve your outdoor space. We’ve listed seven ways for you to get your garden ready for the warmer months that lie ahead.
1. Spruce up your borders
In springtime, everything begins to grow in the garden including weeds, so give it a good tidy up. Clean borders will enhance your entire garden. Add a layer of organic mulch to keep new weeds at bay and to help your seeds to germinate. Think about the design of your garden borders. Add a pop of colour by filling troughs or planters with a variety of flowers and plants. Wildflower ‘bombs’ (seed parcels) can create a vibrant display of colourful flowers that can help to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
2. Curate your garden design
Your garden is an extension of your home, so treat this space like an outdoor room. Just like you would design a room, consider the colour palette, textures and materials. Bring different garden elements together with a connecting theme. Revive a tired shed or guttering and consider painting your fence and raised beds with a fresh, new colour. You could also create zoned areas for different purposes, using gravel or chippings.
3. Add new garden features
From bird baths to mini waterfalls and outdoor statures, there’s a wide range of features that will enhance your garden. Think about using different materials for your pots and containers. Go big when choosing plant pots to ensure enough space for roots, as well as stability from the elements. There are some beautiful pots that can add a touch of elegance to your garden such as Italian terracotta or containers with colourful glazes.
4. Create a vertical garden
Maximise smaller spaces by creating a vertical garden. This is a great idea if you want an edible garden where you grow some or most of your own food. Old pallets or slatted fences work well. Affix hooks or purpose-designed hanging pots. You can plant herbs, vegetables and companion plants to distract pests from nibbling your seedlings. Check your garden aspect, e.g. north, south, east or west facing, to optimise growth.
5. All-season garden plants
Whether it’s within your planters or throughout your garden, do your research so you can ensure colourful displays throughout the year. Create a ‘lasagne’ style planter by layering different bulbs and plants that flower in different seasons. Consider planting trees and shrubs that have colourful leaves at different times of the year. As an example, cherry tree blossom in the spring and red-orange acer leaves in autumn.
6. Light up your garden
Adding lighting to your outdoor spaces not only makes your garden useable after sunset, but it also adds ambience for evening gatherings. You can find a wide range of affordable outside lights that will add instant appeal. These vary from solar-powered lanterns and soft, low-voltage spotlights to energy-efficient LED path lighting and recessed deck lights. Hang outdoor fairy lights or mini lanterns around your patio areas.
7. Think about your space
Make your garden feel part of your home by adding seating and furniture to specific areas. A hanging egg chair in an unused corner could provide your family with a quiet space to unwind. Garden chairs, sofas and benches, as well as outdoor dining sets can help you transform your outdoor space into an entertaining zone. A few well-placed plants around paved areas can connect different areas for a sense of harmony.
