How much space do you need around a dining table?
When buying a dining table, you’ll need to check that you have enough room in the intended space for the table and surrounding chairs. So, how much space do you need around a dining table and how can you measure this? We explore all the different factors you need to consider, from room size to table shape and how many dining chairs you will need.
How to measure space for a dining table
A common problem when people buy a dining table is purchasing the wrong size. The amount of space left could impact your overall dining experience. So, it’s important to get this right before you buy.
When you’re planning to place a dining table in a living space, you will need to know the room size and wall dimensions. This will help you decide on both the size of the dining table and a table shape that will fit comfortably within the room.
We’ve listed some measurement guidelines below:
- Measure from the edge of the proposed dining table to the walls. There needs to be enough space for chairs to be pulled back, and so people can comfortably walk around the table.
- If you have a fireplace or large furniture, then measure from the edge of these features or items. This will help to ensure there’s enough space to walk through the gap, while people are still seated, without having to shuffle sideways.
- Allow around 90 - 100cm from the edge of the intended dining table to the wall. If you want people to move around with ease, then extend this to 110 – 120cm, but this would require a room size of at least 300cm.
- Allow 60cm between each person for a comfy dining position with enough elbow room for each person. When you’re measuring a room for a dining table, always factor in enough space between people when they’re seated.

What size dining table do you need?
When you’re trying to estimate the size of a dining table, start by considering how many chairs you will need to fit around it. Also, think about how the table will be used throughout the year, from everyday use to entertaining guests and special events like Christmas.
If you have a small family, a compact table might suffice for daily meals. However, seasonal gatherings of family and friends might require a larger table. If you only need a big table for occasional use, then consider purchasing an extendable dining table. Remember to calculate the full table dimensions to ensure it will fit in a room when fully extended.
How much space for a dining table - 4 or 6 people
If you’re planning to buy a table for four or six people, then it’s important to allow enough space. One thing to consider is how you serve your meals. If you tend to plate up in the kitchen and bring meals through, then a narrow table might suffice. However, if you tend to present several serving dishes on a dining table, you might need a central zone of 50-60cm.
Working on the 60cm rule between each person, a square 4-person table needs to be at least 1.2m with an ideal room size of 3m x 3m. In comparison, a rectangular 4 to 6-person dining table would need to be at least 160cm in length within a room size of 3m x 2.5m.
Another option is to consider a round dining table. A circular table can typically seat four to six people, especially when supported by a pedestal or cross-leg base instead of corner legs. This table shape and design gives everyone a little more room without knocking knees.
