Summer days are nearly here and now’s the time when you can start planning some fun things to do. So what activities can you do in the summer? We've created a short list of some tried and trusted ideas that you can do as a couple family or with a group of friends.
-
Go for a picnic
It's simple, it's traditional, but sometimes picnics make great memories that you will always remember as a couple or a family. Why not bring other family members together for a budget friendly activity you can all do together? As well as enjoying some quality time, you could also get your children involved when it comes to the food! Delegate a picnic item to each child such as making a few cheese sandwiches! -
Fly a kite
Kite flying is a fun family activity that anyone can do at any age. Nowadays you can get kites in all shapes and sizes, from small traditional ones to animal characters and large stunt kites! This can be a great activity on a windy day, and it can really get everyone’s adrenaline running! It's also a good way of teaching children how to coordinate and navigate a flying object safely, while enjoying the great outdoors. -
Take a hike
If you're not a couple or family that usually goes for long walks, why not consider a shorter distance around a beautiful location? You don't have to go for a ten-mile trek (unless you really want to improve your fitness). Start with a two-mile walk around a local woodland and combine with a game of ‘I Spy’ or another observational game. This is a relaxing, mindful activity that will bring everybody's awareness into the moment. You can gently study your surroundings and enjoy the beauty of nature. -
Grow some flowers or veggies
You don't have to have a big garden to enjoy a spot of gardening. Not only is this educational for a child but it's also great fun too. Why not start by having a sunflower competition? Each child plants a sunflower seed and they can then watch them grow throughout the summertime. Once the sunflowers are fully grown, you can compare the height and name the winner! Planting veggies is also a fun, budget-friendly way to entertain inquisitive minds and you can grow food for the table too. -
Go on a road trip
Whether you're a family, couple or an individual hooking up with friends, you can't beat a good ‘ole road trip! The UK isn't a large country which means you can get to see some really interesting places within just a couple of hours’ drive or train ride. You could choose to visit a castle, zoo, a National Park or a theme park. If you prefer a more urban environment, then choose an historic city like Lincoln, York or Chester. -
Make some popsicles
Making some icy treats in advance will be welcomed by everyone when those hot balmy days finally arrive. Simply freeze some fruit juice in popsicle moulds (these usually come with lolly sticks). You can mix and match any choice of fruit juice to create your own unique ice lollies. If you plan to host any barbeques during the summer, we can guarantee that your guests will be very grateful for these icy treats! -
Hang up a hammock
Do you have a corner of your garden which isn't really being used? Why not consider hanging up a hammock so you can kick back and relax? Many hammocks come with their own freestanding frame these days. So, you don't need to have a nearby tree to hang up this outdoor item. If you’re not keen on hammocks, then you could always place a novel garden chair in this area to create a summer reading nook. -
Create a garden obstacle course
Homemade obstacle courses are a great way to keep bored children entertained. Always think safety first. Place items around the garden such as plastic pipes, balls or cones to create lanes and pathways for children to run around. If you have a paved area such as a patio, you could use coloured chalks to mark out hopscotch or jumping areas. You could also add blankets for children to scramble underneath.
As we head towards summertime, we hope you have found some inspiration with the activity ideas we have shared! With an abundance of outdoor activities and options available for rainy days, the UK has a lot to offer anyone of any age.
Start by jotting down your family’s interests and work from there. Combine outings and day trips with fun activities to create lasting memories that you will all treasure for years to come.
