If you’re struggling for ideas this summer, we have researched seven school holiday activities for kids that will put smiles on their faces...

As everyone knows, our UK summers are notoriously unpredictable. One day it’s balmy sunshine and then it’s cold and wet. So, if you’re struggling for ideas this summertime, we have researched seven school holiday activities for kids. Let’s look at how you can stave off their boredom without breaking the bank and put smiles on everyone’s faces!

  1. Treasure seekers
First, let’s start with an idea that can be easily adapted for indoors if the weather turns cool. Collect a series of fun items and hide them around your garden or home for your children to find. Write some clues to help them find the next piece of treasure, hiding each clue with an item so they can follow the treasure trail. This type of activity will keep them busy and can be equally fun for adults in its creation too!
  2. Hunter scavengers
In warmer weather, a scavenger hunt is a bit like a treasure hunt, but your children have to find a series of natural objects. It can be any type of item or tiny creature – feathers, stones, flower petals, sticks, snails, beetles or even spiders! Why not teach your children to be kind to insects, so they understand their purpose and get rid of any fears at the same time?
  3. Water games
Whether it’s at a scenic spot or in your back garden, most children like some sort of water action. If you have little ones and the sun’s out, then you can’t go wrong with a paddling pool, but why not make this a bit more exciting? Give them different types of vessels to fill such as plastic cups and bowls. Put waterproof items in so they can watch them float such as tiny toys or fragrant petals. Make the experience sensory.
  4. Discounted passes
Before the kids break up, spend an evening on your favourite recliner researching all the family discounts available. Kids Passes offers discounted family day outs to the cinema, zoos and theme parks, as well as meals. Some attractions offer great deals on annual memberships, such as National Trust and English Heritage. So, you can visit more than once for picnics, walks and sightseeing to spread out all the fun.
  5. Story stones
Collect a few flat stones. On each stone, add a picture of an animal, character or an object using paint, stickers, marker pens or even magazine cuttings. Place all the stones in a basket. Ask your child to pick a stone and start telling a story that relates to the stone. Continue picking stones until an entire tale has been crafted! If it’s rainy, why not curl up together on a comfy sofa and listen to your child’s story?
  6. Photo shoot
With modern-day smart phones, it’s all too easy to take high-quality photos. But why not see if you can train your child’s creative eye with a photo project? Whether it’s themed or focused on your local environment, go for a photo walk and let their imaginations run wild. Start with an idea such as photographing everything in one colour. Why not screenshare to your TV and watch together in cinema chairs?
  7. Garden fun
Gardening can be a surprisingly entertaining activity for many children, especially if you get them to grow some edibles or colourful flowers. And if it’s raining, why not bring a few plant pots inside and lay out some newspaper on the kitchen or conservatory floor. Give them some cushions to sit on and let them plant some seeds. Why not create a competition to see whose flower grows the fastest?

No matter if it’s rain or shine, there’s plenty of activities you can do with kids during the school holidays. Hopefully, we’ve given you some ideas to keep your children entertained throughout the summer. Keep them occupied with trails, let them play with nature’s resources, or pay multiple visits to great locations with discounted passes. There’s so much you can do on a shoestring budget that will still allow you to create treasured memories.
