10 New Year’s Resolutions to Refresh Your Home

The new year is often the perfect opportunity to breathe fresh life into your home. Whether you’d like a calmer or more organised space, small changes can have a big impact. Start by focusing on the rooms you use the most. We share ten new year resolutions you can apply to your kitchen, living room and bedroom to help you create a beautiful and practical home.

1.    Declutter your home
By hiding away clutter and removing anything you no longer use or enjoy, you can free up space in your home. Tackle one room at a time to prevent overwhelm, starting with surfaces and working your way into cupboards and drawers. A tidy home creates an instant sense of calmness. As the saying goes, a cluttered room leads to a cluttered mind!

2.    Change your colours
A simple change in colour palette can alter the entire ambience, look and feel of a room, especially if you have tired, faded walls. Consider soft, warming tones in the living room, cool neutrals in the kitchen, and restful pastel hues in the bedroom to create a relaxing atmosphere.

3.    Upgrade old furnishings
Worn-out cushions, throws, rugs and bedding can make a room feel outdated. By simply replacing these soft furnishings, you can quickly transform a space on a low budget. Use textures and layers that create a narrative for the room and consider the look you’re trying to achieve. Think warm fabrics in the living room and soft linen in the bedroom.

4.    Reorganise your kitchen
A functional kitchen is a happier kitchen, and this can be achieved by making sure everything has its own designated place. Rearrange cupboards so the items you use daily are within easy reach, instead of reaching up to high shelves for pots and pans. Smart sliding storage drawers and cupboards can help you optimise room space.

5.    Dedicated relaxation zone
Your living room needs to provide a relaxing atmosphere for you to unwind at the end of a busy day. A cosy reclining armchair will allow you to rest your legs and even take a sneaky snooze. Use soft lighting to create a gentle ambience. If you have enough space, why not add a reading corner so you can enjoy some ‘me time’?

6.    Curate your décor
A curated space involves intentional design – put simply, you’ve thought carefully about how you want a space to look. So, instead of filling shelves and surfaces with objects, choose a handful of pieces that reflect the personality of the room. Create a statement by choosing a matching armchair and footstool that complements your décor theme.

7.    Maximise bedroom comfort
On average, we spend around a third of our lives asleep so your bedroom should feel like a sanctuary. Prioritise a high-quality, solid, supportive bed frame and mattress, as well as comfy pillows. Refresh your bedding and minimise any clutter in your bedroom to create a relaxing environment. Use scented diffusers to infuse the air.

8.    Introduce natural elements
Biophilic design has been trending for some time, and this involves integrating outside elements within the home to boost wellbeing. Use indoor plants, natural materials and organic textures to make your home feel more grounded. A few well-placed plants in the kitchen or living room can instantly brighten up a space, creating a sense of harmony.

9.    Enhance your lighting
An often-forgotten home design element, thoughtful lighting can shape how a room looks and feels. Place warm and inviting lamps in the living room to create a cosy feel, and ambient lighting in kitchen-diners for evening entertaining. In the bedroom, use dimmable bedside lights to help you wind down and relax.

10.  Small daily habits
Why not commit to a five-minute daily tidy in each main room to help you prevent clutter from building up? Not only will this save you time when it comes to house cleaning, but these small habits will make it easier to maintain your home throughout the year.
