One of the biggest decisions you will need to make when you’re buying a sofa is size.

Because in this case, size really does matter!

And we’re not just talking room size; you need to make sure your sofa is roomy enough for whoever will be using it.

So, the question is - do you need a 2 or 3-seater sofa? We’ve put together a simple guide to help you decide…

Sofa sizes in short

In most cases, a 2-seater sofa will be classed as ‘medium’ and a 3-seater as ‘large’.

However, due to increasingly small living spaces, there are a number of compact 2-seater sofas that can only be classed as ‘small’. Already confused? Let’s explain…

Think about who will be using the sofa. For example, if you’re a family of five, there may be armchairs in the room already allocated to adults, so the sofa might be intended for the children.

Although they’re young and could easily fit on a 2-seater today, those children will grow into tweens, teens, and eventually adults (those years go fast!). So, you may be wise to invest into a larger, 3-seater sofa now, rather than wait for those sibling squabbles to escalate.

Another example is the ‘urban couple’, living in an apartment or new build where space comes at a premium. In this case, a small 2-seater might be more practical; if there’s only really room for one other armchair, this will give two people the option of cuddling up together or sitting alone.

Sofa style and design

Sometimes, a 3-seater sofa may over-dominate a room due to being surrounded by clutter or too many other furniture items. But if the number of seats is a top priority for you and your family, then it may be prudent to clear the room and make way for your hot new sofa!

Before you choose between two or three seats, look at the sofa design.

As well as it’s physical overall size, the style will help you to determine whether it will look right in your room setting.

If it’s a corner or chaise style, then consider how this might look alongside existing armchairs and how space will be divided within the room. If your living room isn’t a square area, then the sofa may inevitably split the space into zones, which may or may not be ideal.

Sofa seat size and cushions

Often overlooked are the sofa seat cushions in terms of size and style.

Obviously, you would need to consider who will be using your sofa to determine the number of seats, as you don’t want to cram everyone together.

Some sofas have large, bench-style cushions that stretch across the length of the sofa, whereas other styles have individual cushions which will be shaped by the person seated.

Think about your family dynamics for a moment. Are you the type of family that enjoys cuddling up together on a sofa to watch a film? If so, a bench-style sofa might be a good option.

Or are you a family who enjoy having your own space, but will still be sharing the sofa with others? If this is the case, then go for individual sofa cushions, which offer a good level of support for every person seated.
