Whether you’re planning a staycation or a trip abroad, we've researched ten summer activities for adults for when you’re at home or outdoors.

It’s summertime and we’ve seen plenty of glorious sunshine so far. This is a special time of year where memories are made, and every moment should be cherished. Whether you’re planning a staycation or a trip abroad, there are lots of fun summer activities for adults. Our team have researched ten of the best ideas for when you’re at home or outdoors.

1.    Go on an adventure
Instead of opting for the standard package holiday, why not choose an adventure this summer? It doesn’t have to cost the Earth or involve globetrotting. You could explore a UK city or rural area that you’ve never been to before. Go international by taking part in your own Race Across the World challenge without air travel. If you’re fit, you could
walk the South West Coast Path, staying at B&Bs or camping along the way.

2.    Hold a themed summer party
Whether it’s a big birthday or you just want to get everyone together, why not host a summer party with a difference? Theme your event from the clothes (or costumes) to the food and music. Instead of a standard BBQ, give your event an extra edge with a culinary speciality such as Spanish Tapas or Indian Street Food. And if you want to go the extra mile and have the budget, book an outdoor caterer to do it all for you!

3.    Go to a board games cafe
In recent years, board games have been transformed to become the number one pastime for many people and families! With a seemingly infinite number of games to play, you can find dedicated board-game cafes where you can try different types. A great activity for a rainy day, you could combine this idea with a visit to see friends or family. Why not make it part of a day trip to explore an interesting town or city?

4.    Picnic with friends or family
It’s one of the oldest traditions, but there’s still so much fun to be had with a picnic. But why not switch it up a little by including some fun outdoor games? From French Cricket to Finnish Skittles, there are lots of different games you can now try, which can be easily transported to a beautiful local park. Don’t like sports? Have a picnic in your garden with comfy cushions and a jug of homemade Pimms or Sangria.

5.    Festival at home or away
In the UK, Europe and across the world, there are plenty of festivals to suit every music taste, which can be combined with a holiday. But if you’re done with trudging through endless fields at Glasto, then why not recreate the festival vibe at home? Get your besties around, put up your tents, and stream live festivals directly to your garden using a home-movie projector. Use an old sheet for your screen, and bingo!

6.    Try open water swimming
There’s nothing quite like being surrounded by nature, and open water swimming offers a fully immersive natural experience! It’s important to only swim in safe, monitored outdoor pools and lakes, so why not see what’s in your local area? If you’re looking to do something different this summer, then you could combine this activity with a short stay in a forest lodge. There are lots of UK open water locations.

7.    Take up a sport
Have you been meaning to play an outdoor sport for some time, but it never seems to happen? Take full advantage of the warm summer weather by picking up a tennis racket, grabbing a cricket bat or dribbling that old football! Check out any local clubs you can join to improve on your skills. Some local councils also provide sports tuition for a small fee at public leisure facilities, so find out what’s available in your area.

8.    Gaze at star constellations
This is a great activity which can be done when you’re on your own, with your favourite person or as a group of friends. To avoid getting a cricked neck, our top tip is to make sure you’re
fully reclined on a deckchair or sun lounger so you can stare upwards. There are some useful apps such as SkyView that use augmented reality (AR) technology to create a map of overhead star constellations. Sit back and enjoy.

9.    Learn a new language
Heading to the Mediterranean later this summer or want to give your grey matter a boost? Learning a language is a great way to spend your time and it also keeps your brain healthy too. Spanish and Italian are considered two of the easiest, and you can download language apps like
Babbel and Duolingo to help you learn. If you studied French or German at school, then it can be easier to improve your existing skills.

10.  Create a cosy nook
Don’t have the budget to go far afield? You could dedicate your time to finding a corner of your garden where you can create a cosy haven. Fill the space with zen objects that promote peace such as cushions, candles and pebbles. Hang up a hammock and if you don’t have a handy tree, you can get ones with a frame. Or position a
hanging egg chair in your new nook so you can curl up and read a book.
