Despite the glorious summer, knowing how to keep your bedroom and home cool in hot weather can be a challenge. We look at some easy solutions

This year we’ve been spoilt for sunshine! However, despite all of the glorious sunny days, knowing how to keep your bedroom cool in summer can be a challenge. If you have a south-facing room, live in an apartment or a built-up urban area, getting to sleep can become a tedious daily task. Let’s look at some ways you can keep cool in a heatwave…

Keeping your home cool in hot weather at night

Here are several ways to cool down your bedroom, so you can get a better night’s rest:

·         Close windows, curtains and blinds during the day
On a hot day, one of the best ways to ensure your bedroom reaches a comfortable sleeping temperature is to keep windows and curtains closed. Open them early morning and once the sun goes down to let in cooler air. If your bedroom is above the living room, keep sunshine out of this lower room to stop heat from rising into your bedroom. To encourage air flow, you could also open skylights and loft hatches.

·         Use a desktop, pedestal or tower fan
Using cooling equipment like a fan or dehumidifier works more effectively if you have let any hot air out of your bedroom, as above. Fans create air movement, so there’s a risk of blowing hot air around the room. However, you could place ice cubes in front of the fan, and some fans have built-in ice trays to help circulate cooled air.
According to the
Energy Savings Trust, the typical cost for using a fan over 24 hours is between £0.15 and £0.31. This is much cheaper and environmentally friendly than using an air conditioning unit (£4.84 - £6 for 24 hours).

·         Don’t use kitchen appliances when it’s hot
Unless you really need to use an appliance, try not to use washing machines, dishwashers, ovens and cookers on hot days. All of these kitchen appliances produce heat, so by keeping them switched off you can help to lower temperatures inside your home. They can also raise the humidity, making the air feel close and sticky. A dehumidifier can make the room more comfortable by removing excess moisture, especially when combined with a fan.

·         Swap duvets with cotton sheets
Most people swap their duvets to a smaller tog during the summer. However, when it’s really hot, even a thin duvet can cause you to swelter at night. A simple, flat cotton sheet is more comforting, and you can easily pull it over your body if the temperature falls during the early hours. And this solution works far better than hanging a leg or foot out of a duvet to try and cool down!

·         Take a cool shower or bath
By taking a lukewarm shower or bath you can try to reduce your body temperature before you go to sleep. However, be careful not to try and cool your body too quickly using ice, as this can be harmful and cause your body to shut down. Wrapping an ice pack in a towel can also help to keep your bed cooler without direct skin contact.

·         Wear loose cotton sleepwear
One interesting fact is that although many people believe sleeping naked during a heatwave is better, cotton pyjamas are recommended. When you sleep without nightwear, sweat can accumulate on your body making you feel sticker and more uncomfortable. Sleepwear made from natural fibres helps to absorb moisture so it can evaporate, keeping you cooler and drier than if you were naked.

Consider your bed frame

One way our customers have shielded sleeping areas from hot sunshine is by using drapes across our 4-poster bed frames. Also, many of our beds come with a slatted wooden base or slatted metal base, which helps to regulate the air temperature. When cooler air can move more freely around your bed frame, this helps to increase the airflow around your bedroom.

Available in a range of sizes, our SlumberWorx beds contain a wide range of options for children and adults. And don’t forget, our products are purposefully designed for hassle-free, easy self-assembly. We hope you manage to enjoy the sunshine and stay cool this summer!
