According to interior design experts, the forthcoming year is all about bringing warmth into our homes

According to interior design experts, the forthcoming year is all about bringing warmth into our homes. As a result, trending colours are forecast to be warm oranges, terracotta, buttery tans and burnt ochres. When it comes to shape and form, the predicted vibe is organic, simple and natural with a retro twist. And, when it comes to choosing fabrics for your furniture and furnishings, it’s all about using tactile textures and being bold when it comes to combining patterns. Let’s take a closer look…

Colour Theory

Without going into specifics, great interior schemes always embrace the principles of colour theory. For example, this autumn the stores have been featuring mustard yellow and china blue combinations. Orange and blue are complementary colours - two colours that are directly opposite on a colour wheel – which is why warm yellows blend in so well with shades of blue. This colour combo looks set to continue with deeper, russet orange fabrics being offset against accent colours such as baby blue. Other on-trend accent colours for 2020 include minty green and muted pink.

Tactile Textiles

The buzz word next year will be ‘bouclé - this is a type of yarn and fabric, which is made from loops and curls. If you want to inject a bit of bouclé into your living spaces, then think throws, cushion covers and rugs. The aim of the game will be to create a warm and cosy setting, which still provides an air of class and sophistication. For curtains, blinds and furniture coverings, think natural with decorative stitching or finishes.

Feature Furniture

When it comes to sofa and chair covers, think leather, linen or even soft corduroy for a warm, luxurious feel. If you are looking to create a real statement, then our all-time top-selling Eden Fabric Recliner Armchair comes in a variety of gorgeous tartan fabrics, including a stunning blue option. This chair would work equally well in a neutral room or as a feature chair offsetting with warmer shades. And, the reclining mechanism is completely hidden, so only you will know the Eden’s little secret…

If you want to really inject some warmth into your living room, then nothing beats a chair with its own heat function! The Salisbury Manual Latch Recliner comes with a heated 8-point vibrational massage, which is perfect for easing tired and weary limbs after a long day at work or running after little ones. This model is covered with soft, brown, bonded leather, which will blend in beautifully with a variety of colour schemes. And, the Salisbury is easy to keep clean too, so you won’t have to worry about any food and drinks spillages.

Feeling overwhelmed when it comes to knowing how to mix and match design elements? Here are a few helpful tips to get you started:

  • Take a couple of aspects and use these together subtly to create a liveable look that suits you and your family. For example, consider your wall colour and furnishings, and play around with different combinations of colour and texture.

  • Experiment with different colours by using paint pots and fabric samples.

  • Aim for no more than three colours for any room design - main, contrast and highlight.

  • Notice how natural light falls within the spaces you are looking to redesign, as this will affect the overall feel of the room and any items you place within.

  • Drape throws or scarves over existing furniture to help you choose a suitable shade of fabric for new sofas and chairs.
