It seems that everyone has an opinion on what you should eat, how you should sleep, and what you need to do to keep fit.

Well, we’re certainly not about to give you another lecture! But what we would like to do is to share a few simple ideas to help you feel more productive for your working day ahead.

So, why not take a few moments to consider the following?

Are you pained or fatigued?

Did you know that comfort is directly linked to productivity?

As people are now working at home more than ever before, comfort can often be overlooked, especially when you’re time-pressured trying to meet that deadline or send that urgent email. If you want to be more productive, you need to be able to focus on the task in hand.

If you regularly struggle with backache or neck pain, you’re likely to feel tired and you may experience ‘brain fog’ which will interfere with your concentration.

If this applies to you, try to find and address the source of your pain to avoid bigger problems later down the line.

Perhaps you need to reassess your desk and chair setup?

Are you getting enough sleep?

Do you wake up just before your alarm goes off or do you hit the snooze button and nod off for another 10 minutes?

Feeling rested before you start your working day is one of the best ways to maximise productivity.

Check your evening routine to ensure you are fully relaxed before you go to sleep. You could read a book, listen to some soothing music, or add lavender oil to an essential oil diffuser to induce sleepiness.

Avoid looking at your phone before you sleep, as the blue light being emitted can interfere with your sleeping patterns.

Also avoid eating too late at night, especially sugary foods, which will either keep you awake or lead to a disrupted night’s sleep.

Are you hydrated?

It’s thought that most people do not drink enough water, and this can also make you feel tired, lethargic and unable to concentrate.

Although we do get some fluids from the foods we eat, the NHS recommends that people should ideally drink about 1.2 litres of water per day in the UK.

So, why not keep a bottle of water with a measure on the side on your desk, so you can keep track of how much water you’re drinking?

Are you ‘eating the frog’?

Although this phrase has been used a lot in the business world, this expression originally comes from Mark Twain.

When you ‘eat the frog’ it means the worst is behind you; by tackling your hardest task first, the rest of your day’s activities will seem much easier.

So, why not create a checklist and tick off your tasks each day by dealing with the most difficult one first?

Are you sitting correctly?

Whether you’re working from a dining room table or a desk bank, make sure you carry out a ‘workstation assessment’. There’s lots of guidance online or, if you work for a large company, speak to your HR team to see if they can arrange this for you.

One of the best ways to address any desk issues is to
buy a fully adjustable office/gaming chair, which will allow you to move the armrests so your chair slides comfortably underneath.

Are you seated comfortably?

If you’re not already using a purposefully designed office or gaming chair, and you’re sat in front of a computer all day, then you’re at risk of experiencing back problems in the future.

Look for a chair that has excellent lumbar support, a recline function, and movable back cushions and head pillows for extra comfort.

Some office/gaming chairs come with a footrest to maximise your level of comfort.
