With the Olympic Games just around the corner, we explore some fun-filled ways to get ready including decorative ideas and kids activities...

The Olympic Games are about to start, and there are so many ways you can join in with the sporting festivities. Whether it’s rain or shine, this is a great opportunity to hold a party or an event in the comfort of your own home or garden. So, why not get Olympic games ready with our fun and inspirational ideas?

When and where is the Olympic Games?
Let’s start with some basic info so you can diarise your fun-filled antics. The 2024 Olympic Games are being held in Paris between Friday 26 July until Sunday 11 August. 206 countries will be represented at the Olympics and 184 countries at the Paralympics. The games start with a spectacular Opening Ceremony, a colourful feast of lights and music.

However, the games will actually be spread across 35 venues in Paris and across France. This includes the Aquatics Centre, the famous Palace of Versailles, and the Bordeaux Stadium around 2 hours from the capital. If you’re not lucky enough to be attending the Olympic Games, then why not bring the celebrations to your home instead?

Hold an Olympics garden party
Whether you plan to watch the games on TV with friends, family or little ones, there’s lots of ways you can get into the Olympic spirit. It’s a great opportunity to have people round, so why not host a garden party? And you can always take the celebrations indoors if there’s a summer rainstorm!

Here are some fun ideas to help you celebrate the Olympics:
• Make colourful bunting, paper chains and flags
Set the scene by creating decorations that match the national flags of the countries competing. This is a fun activity you can do with children, especially as the summer holidays are now in full swing. Glue pieces of coloured paper to drinking straws or chopsticks to make your own flags and wave these during the opening ceremony.

• Hold your own Olympics tournament
Another fun activity you can do with little ones, replicate some of the games in your back garden. To prevent any breakages, clear any garden ornaments out of the way, and use items like soft balls for shot put and skittles for hurdles. You could create a mini 100 metres, marking the start and finish lines with chalk or masking tape.

• Indoor activity to celebrate the games
If the weather turns and it begins to rain, do not fear! There are lots of things you can do to keep everyone’s spirits up. Why not make your own medals? Using a panel from an old cardboard box and a mug, draw multiple circles and cut these out. Wrap these in foil and gold metallic paper, then make a hole and affix coloured ribbons.

• Quiz time for adults and older children
Another activity that can be done indoors, especially during the evening is a quiz. Get everyone around your dining table and hold an Olympics quiz night. This one will take a bit of research and bear in mind everyone’s ages! Although you might remember Daley Thompson, Usain Bolt is better known with younger generations.

• Prepare a foodie feast for champions
There’s no better way to celebrate all of the competing nations and their vibrant cultures by cooking up a delicious feast! Choose a country and then make or bake their national dishes. Try Canadian pancakes for breakfast, Jamaican patties for lunch, and Italian spaghetti bolognaise for dinner. Snuggle up together afterwards on your comfy sofa to watch the latest games.

Decorative themes for the Olympics
Some people are choosing a decorative theme with a French twist. But you could choose a décor theme to celebrate any country close to your heart. When it comes to children, why not pick a variety of countries and explore all the great things each one has to offer? Not only will this create a fun learning opportunity, but you could include a wider variety of themed foodie treats! Every nation has its own cultural characteristics you can explore.

From parties to sweepstakes and fun-themed activities, there are so many ways to enjoy the Olympic Games. Get ready in style and settle in for a great season of sporting heroes. After all, the Olympics is where medals are won and legends are made.
